#GivingTuesdayYou may have seen this hashtag on your Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram newsfeeds today. What is it all about? In response to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday is a movement to create a global day of giving to kick off the holiday season. New York’s 92nd Street Y was the catalyst for the movement and is serving as its fiscal sponsor. Many other charities are also getting involved. #GivingTuesday boasts more than 10,000 nonprofit partners worldwide.

For profit companies are also excited about the movement. Google started its first ever “Hangout-a-thon,” which is aimed at helping people connect over charities. It will feature 12 hours of guests discussing the nonprofits they support, including celebrity guests such as Jennifer Garner. Amazon is also getting into the spirit, donating $20 to customers’ favorite charities for every Kindle Fire purchased now through Sunday. Customers have the opportunity to choose from nearly a million charities around the country.

Indiegogo, a crowdfunding website, is contributing $1 for every $20 raised today on #GivingTuesday campaigns. Click here to start a campaign for your organization. So far today, $986,042 has been raised on Indiegogo by 243 charities.
